  1. Days spent in hospital are reported as median (interquartile range). Longer stay is defined as <=7 days vs. >7 days. The relative risk (RR) for longer stay and in-hospital mortality is defined as the risk for those with the morbidity compared to those without. Cost estimates are for both direct and indirect expenditures combined. All estimates were adjusted for patient age as a continuous variable. CI denotes confidence interval. Confidence intervals which encompass zero suggest no evidence of a dollar change in cost
