Microscopic findings. The cervical spinal cord showed severe neuronal loss of anterior horn cells (a) and Bunina bodies (b). Neuronophagia was observed in the precentral gyrus (c). Phosphorylated TDP-43 neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions were present in the precental gyrus (d). Globose-shaped neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) was detected in the substantia nigra by H-E staining (e) and immunostaining for phosphorylated tau (f) and 4-repeat tau (g).
